Helipad Fire Response Team

The Helipad Fire Response Team is a small group of dedicated Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust staff who operate the Trust’s Helipad from the Leeds General Infirmary.

The team were certified in 1997 as Rescue Fire Fighters (RFFs) at Teeside International Firefighting College. The LGI Helipad had the First NHS Certificated RFFs in the Country. The Team was recognised by the Trust in 1998 for the work they were undertaking and agreed to pay them as retained fire fighters.

The Helipad is primarily used by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance for transporting critically ill patients to A & E, Cardiac Cath Labs and other emergency departments; they also support local Police Authorities and the military.

They have being filmed by the BBC and featured in the series Helicopter Heroes, highlighting the vital work that they do. In 2010 the Team won five awards; two through The Air Ambulance community, two through the Estates & Facilities Awards for Team Working & Innovation, and one member collected an Industry award as the highest scoring officer in the country in his Aviation exams. The world authority on aviation (OICA) declared the operation at the LGI Helipad as a centre of excellence after a visit.

The team is fully trained in fire fighting, the use of Breathing Apparatus, Search & Rescue, and additional life saver techniques.
